New Low-Cost Single Axis MEMS DC Accelerometers for Industrial Applications

The 100% veteran-owned and U.S.-based Silicon Designs, Inc. (www.silicondesigns.com), industry experts in the design, development and manufacture of highly rugged industrial-grade MEMS DC accelerometer chips and modules, today announced the global market availability of its Models 2260 and 2266, two low-cost, single axis MEMS DC accelerometer families, offering accurate and precise shock and vibration measurements within industrial and other zero-to-medium frequency instrumentation applications.

Offered in eight unique standard ranges from ±2 g to ±400 g, the Silicon Designs Models 2260 and 2266 combine durability, quality and flexibility with an industry-best-in-class noise specification down to 10 μg √Hz typical (±2 g version). Each accelerometer provides high-drive, low-impedance outputs, supporting up to 2000 feet of cable; as well as two analog voltage outputs, which vary with acceleration. Their rugged design features a simple four-wire connection and incorporates a hermetically sealed low-noise MEMS accelerometer chip, housed within a robust, anodized aluminum case, with choice of integrated cable (Model 2260) or connector (Model 2266), in support of both single-ended and differential modes. Each accelerometer case is potted then epoxy sealed, with mounting via two screws, adhesive, or magnet. Onboard voltage regulation and an internal voltage reference eliminate the need for precision power supplies. The accelerometer sensitive axis is perpendicular to the bottom of the package, with positive acceleration defined as a force pushing on the bottom of the package. Accelerometer sensitivity is independent of the +8V to +32V supply voltage. Signal outputs are fully differential around a common mode of approximately 2.5V. The accelerometers are simple to power, even from a standard 9V battery. At zero acceleration, differential voltage output is nominally 0 VDC; at full scale, ±4 VDC. Units respond to both DC and AC acceleration (0 to 2000 Hz), and can reliably operate over a standard temperature range of -55° to +125°C, with relative insensitivity to temperature changes and gradients. Models 2260 and 2266 further feature quick and easy self-calibration, and are shipped fully calibrated and serialized for traceability. Custom ranges and capabilities, as well as OEM volume, program, and quantity discounts, may also be available. Please consult Silicon Designs for details.

The Models 2260 and 2266 are ideal for shock and vibration testing, impact testing, robotics, industrial, seismic studies, factory automation, automotive testing, aircraft testing, machinery monitoring, and virtually any zero-to-medium frequency application where accuracy, reliability, extreme low noise, and long-term stability are absolute requirements. About Silicon Designs, Inc. Silicon Designs was founded in 1983 with the goal of improving the accepted design standard for traditional MEMS DC accelerometers. At that time, industrial-grade accelerometers were bulky, fragile and costly. The engineering team at Silicon Designs listened to the needs of customers who required more compact, sensitive, rugged and reasonably priced accelerometer modules and chips, though which also offered higher performance. Resultant product lines were designed and built to surpass customer expectations. The company has grown steadily over the years, while its core competency remains accelerometers, with the core business philosophies of “make it better, stronger, smaller and less expensive” and “let the customer drive R&D” maintained to this day.
