How to Set Up Your Silicon Designs Accelerometer
Silicon Designs’ Industrial Test & Measurement MEMS DC accelerometer modules are simple to set up and operate. Depending on the model, excitation power will require either a steady +5V DC or a range from +8V to +32V DC. Each axis requires its own channel on your data acquisition (DAQ) system: a 1-axis module uses one channel, while a 3-axis module may use up to three if all axes are active. All models support both differential and single-ended outputs. Wiring guidance for both configurations is included below.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Precautions
Before removing the accelerometer from its antistatic packaging, attach a ground strap to yourself or your workstation. Handling accelerometers with proper ESD precautions is highly recommended. Keep the original ESD bag or protective case for reference and future storage.
Physical Installation
Mount the module securely at its intended location using one of the recommended methods below. The mounting surface must be flat, clean, and free of debris. Avoid excessive bending or placing strain on the sensor cable.
Common mounting options:
- Apply a small amount of glue, epoxy, or adhesive
- Attach to a mounting block or stud with screws or bolts
- Mount directly to a flat surface using screws or bolts
Torque Guidelines: Use care not to over-torque when using threaded fasteners. Below are maximum dry torque values for non-plated screws:
- 1/4-20 (for 2230 mounting block): 6 ft-lbs
- M6x1 (for 2230 mounting block): 100 kpsi
- #4-40 coarse thread: 4.9 in-lbs (78 in-oz) or up to 10 in-lbs (160 in-oz)
- 3 mm coarse thread: 6.2 cm-kg (86 in-oz) or up to 112.7 cm-kg (176 in-oz)
Adjustments for thread and material:
- For fine threads: Increase torque values by 9%
- For plated screws: Decrease torque values to 66%
- If using lubricating oil: Decrease torque values to 40%
Important: Always power down all equipment before connecting the accelerometer wiring.
Initial Setup – Differential Mode
For the highest resolution and lowest noise performance, SDI recommends differential wiring. Connect the sensor to your DAQ system using both the AOP (positive output) and AON (negative output) signals.
Wiring sequence:
- Connect signal wires following the differential wiring diagram
- Connect the red wire (power)
- Connect the black wire (ground)
- Connect the shield or ground wire last
Ensure your power supply matches the accelerometer’s voltage requirement. Applying excessive voltage can permanently damage the unit.
DAQ Settings: Set your data acquisition system to a range of ±4 volts in differential mode.
Initial Setup – Single-Ended Mode
If configuring for single-ended operation, do not connect the AON (negative output) signal wires. Instead, use a jumper wire to connect the black (ground) wire to an unused negative input location on your DAQ system that corresponds with the signal channel being used.
DAQ Settings: Set your data acquisition system to a range of 0.5 to +4.5 volts in single-ended mode.
